History of the  Derrflinger:

Derrflinger forms part of the Urka fleet (meaning Fluit in Dutch, or flute in English). These types of ships were designed primarily for trading, in order to keep up with the considerable growth in sea trade. In eight years, eighty Urkas were registered under the flag of the city of Hoorn.

The vessel was built to a lightweight design, despite its appearance. It had a large cargo carrying capacity (one hundred and seventy-tons), and could be readily handled by a small crew. Notably the deck was narrow.

The chronicler in the city of Hoorn noted in his writings that the promoter of this vessel was Pieter Janz Liborne, who maintained a busy trading relationship with Italy.

These ships were generally thirty-three metres in length with a beam of nearly seven metres. The weapons they carried were many and varied. Until 1683, they had six 4 pound guns and two 2 pounders, but sometimes they carried as many as sixteen guns.

They made many voyages to West Africa to the Shetland Islands in September 1691, using the longest route in order to avoid the French pirates in the English Channel.
