Product decscription:
Using original plans and drawings, our model makers have carefully incorporated all the design features into this elegantly constructed model of a ship. The Caravel ship model has been fully handcrafted with great level of attention to detail, and is one of the many historical ship models we have available here at Model Ships.
Built in 1400s, it derives the name from an ancient boat type known as ‘carabus’ in Latin. Caravel sailing ships were used for the next 300 years in order to explore the African coast. Developed on the basis of existing fishing boats and the sponsorship of Prince Henry the Navigator of Portugal, Caravels were soon the preferred sailing ships for Portuguese explorers.
The Caravels were broad-beamed ships which had 2 or 3 masts with square sails and a triangular sail. Usually around 65 feet long they were able to carry roughly 130 tons of cargos. These sailing ship were smaller and lighter than the later Spanish galleons developed in the 1500’s.
Noticeable features of these sailing ships include its high speed and manoeuvrability. With lighter weight and higher speed the caravel models were a godsend to sailors. The lateen sail used on the sailing ships enabled capacity for sailing to windward. Due to these exceptional features, Caravel ships were used in accompanying vessels for Columbus’s voyage expedition in 1492.
This ship model is representative of the quality and expertise here at Model Ships. Using the highest quality of materials and precise ship modelling craftsmanship, this wonderful model ship would make an ultimate addition to your collection.
