HMS Bellona Model Ships
Our HMS Bellona model ships are replicas of the second Royal Navy ship that was named Bellona. In total the name was used 8 times, and the ships were named after Bellona who was the goddess of war according to Roman Mythology This rate ship of the British Royal Navy was designed by Sir Thomas Slade and a prototype of the various 74-gun ships used in the latter part of the 18th century.
Some Important Facts about HMS Bellona
• Manufactured at the Chatham dockyard from May 1758 to February 1760, the HMS Bellona is remembered for its role in the Seven Years' War, the American revolutionary war and the wars with Napoleon.
• The design of Bellona was modified and used in several other British Navy ships. While the size, layout and structure of the other ships was similar to that of Bellona, the shape of the underwater hull was modified.
• The ship's journey started in 1760 when it was made the part of the squadron assigned the task of blockading Brest during the Seven Years War.
• HMS Bellona's next task was to patrol the river Tagus in Spain and during this mission it sighted a French ship Courageux along with two frigates. There followed a battle in which the British Brilliant attacked the two frigates while the Bellona took on the Courageux. The French ship was captured, repaired and incorporated into the Royal Navy.
• HMS Bellona was paid off in 1962 and remained so until 1780 when it participated in the American revolutionary war. A salient feature of the ship at this time was its copper layering.
• Until 1783, the ship sailed in the North Sea and the West Indies as well as participating in the relief of Gibraltar.
• The ship sent to the West Indies in 1793.
• HMS Bellona was also a part of the Battle of Copenhagen in 1801.
• The ship served in the North Sea and the Bay of Biscay until 1814 before being broken oup.
