This achievement was considered to be on one of the greatest discoveries and probably that is the reason why even centuries after, Italian navy named its training warship after the navigator.

History of Amerigo Vespucci Model Ship

Amerigo Vespucci ship was the outcome of an order given by Regina Marina (formerly Royal Navy of Italy) which required two school ships to be designed on the lines of 18th century's 74 cannon large ships. The ship was built in 1930 and commissioned in 1931. Amerigo Vespucci has since been continually active except for the Second World War. It has also completed a voyage around the world in 2002.

Design of Amerigo Vespucci Model Ship

Amerigo Vespucci ship was designed by Italian Navy Engineering Corps' General Lieutenant Francesco Rotundi. Being of Italian origin, the stern and bow of Amerigo Vespucci ship is ornately decorated with intricate curios. It comes with a black painted full rigged steel hull with two white stripes. The ship also comprised of a life size figurehead statue of Amerigo Vespucci. The ship had 26 sails – all of them in traditional canvas material. The vessel was a sharp contrast to other training vessels due to her full lines. A Norwegian marine commander described the two sister ships – Amerigo Vespucci and Cristoforo Colombo as "majestic men-of-war, under a press of canvas and sailing proudly."
