History of the Ship:

On 4th July 1819, the ships of the first Russian Antarctic expedition left St. Petersburg. They were the "Vostok" and the "Mirniy".

"Mirniy" was built in 1816 at the Kronstad ship-yard. She had the following dimensions:   Length - 36m (KWL), Width - 9m, and a displacement of about 630 tons.
"
Mirniy" was first employed on guard duty around the Baltic sea coast.   In 1818, the Emperor of Russia, Alexander I, ordered an expedition to the Southern Ocean. For this purpose, "Mirniy" underwent a general overhaul. Her Captain was Mikail Lasarev, later an admiral. The boarding was changed and the spants forced. The ship was armed with 20 three-pound guns.

On 16th January 1820, "Mirniy" and "Vostok" reached the Antarctic at altitude of 66.22' South. This is the day of the Discovery of the Antarctic.
