Harvey Model Boats

Harvey Model Boats are available in two sizes in our gold and silver ranges. These models are exact replicas of the original American ship by the same name. The Harvey ship was part of the Baltimore clipper series designed by the American Navy for faster movement in the water. The design of these fast paced ships meant a revolution in ship design which was previously dominated by heavy and slow moving ships designed by the British, Spanish, French and Dutch.

The American Navy changed the way the ships were designed and manufactured by introducing models that were lighter and faster. Of the various varieties of ships designed by the US, the Baltimore packets or Baltimore clippers launched in 1812 proved to be very useful. These vessels were lightly gunned but fast and manoeuverable due to their sleek hulls and sharp angled prows. These clipper ships were capable of moving in and out of small coastal harbors with great ease.

The Harvey, a clipper ship was built in 1847 in the US state of Maryland. The ship had two masts and was used for varying purposes including the moving of gold during the Californian gold rush.  The ship was also successfully used to overtake and capture British merchant ships carrying cargo for British forces. This 225 ton ship was 97 feet long, 25 feet wide and had a depth of less than 11 feet.

One of the fastest ships, Harvey could complete the entire run from California to New York  around Cape Horn in 89 days and this was before the Panama Canal had been built.
