The Thonier wooden ship model has been handcrafted with wonderful detail, and is one of the many wooden ship models that we have available here at Model Ships. This scale model is a perfect replica of the classic Thonier fishing ship and contains all the design features of the original vessel.

This classic fishing ship first appeared in the fishing ports of La Rochelle and Sables d’Orlonne on the Bay of Biscay. This was around a time where the French tuna fishing fleet were enduring frequent loss of ships and life due to tremendous Atlantic storms.

Using original drawing and plans, these gifted artisans have created this replica model of a ship which transformed the way fishing ships were built.

The idea behind the transformation and construction of the Thonier came from Pierre Baron, and today that seaman is still referred to as the father of the Atlantic fishing ship.

This transformation proved to be such a success that all the fishermen began to transform their sailing ships according to his specifications.

Predominantly used for fishing tuna, the main characteristics of the model ship are and its long, slim hull which enabled the ship to move fast and gain high speed necessary for tuna fishing. When the fish is spotted, the seven lines are lowered down and the ship maintains its speed of approximately 5-7 knots.
