Cutty Sark Model Ships

Clippers were fast sailing ships of the nineteenth century, their design featured a square rig and three or more masts. They were known to be very efficient in strong winds. Cutty Sark was one of the fastest clippers of its day and even bystanders and crewmembers from other ships were left spellbound by its speed and splendour. Cutty Sark Specifications

The ship’s bottom was constructed using American rock elm while East India teak was used to construct the parts of Cutty Sark above the waterline. The dimensions of the keel were 16.5 x 15 inches and there was a garboard strake of 11 x 12 inches on either side. Brass bolts were used to secure the external timbers to the internal iron frame. The rudder was made of English Oak. The overall length of Cutty Sark came out to be 280 feet with a dead weight of 921 tons. The speed of Cutty Sark was 17.5 knots which was the maximum recorded speed for a clipper. Cutty Sark was also considered to perform well in heavy winds.
