Asgard II was a brigantine that was commissioned in 1981 as an Irish sail training vessel. The ship was named for the Asgard, which was a yacht that was used to smuggle weapons in the early 20th century to the Irish volunteers. The ship was owned by the Irish state and used as a national sail training vessel until it sank 27 years later.

The ship was sailing from Falmouth to La Rochelle with a 5 member crew and 20 trainees for maintenance when she began to take on water. The crew was assisted by lifeboats and abandoned the ship. The Asgard II sank in the Bay of Biscay in September of 2008.
By the end of the year, an effort began to raise the ship, as it was in fairly good condition and situated upright on the sea floor, aside from some damage in one of the planks on the hull. Due to delays and politics, the window for favorable weather passed and, ultimately, the ship was not raised and remains on the sea bed in the Bay of Biscay.
