The HMS Surprise model ship arrived in perfect condition, the day before my husband's birthday. It is amazingly beautiful and detailed; he was speechless when he saw it. He spent about an hour exploring it that first day, using his reference texts on O'Brian's novels to examine every detail. He was very moved by the gift and the skill and craftsmanship of your ship model builders. He's an engineer, and was particularly impressed with the way you designed and packaged the crate the HMS Surprise arrived in. He's planning on sending you and your employees his own message to express his admiration and thanks personally.

The HMS Surprise was a famous frigate that was originally constructed in France in 1794 and captured by the British two years later. HMS Surprise was a French Frigate, which was among the most sought after ships for the British due to the speed and ease of maneuvering the vessels. When originally built, the ship was named L’Unite and was used in battle and to intercept enemy merchant ships. When she was taken by the British, Unite was being used on courier missions.
After the ship was captured and claimed for Britain, the name of the vessel was changed from L’Unite to HMS Surprise. At this time, she was armed and outfitted as a 28 gun ship that included carronades, long guns and more. In late 1799, after the ship was commissioned for the British Navy, the HMS Surprise was led on a rescue mission for the frigate Hermoine. Under the command of Captain Edward Hamilton, the ship led other boats into battle to regain control of the Hermoine, which was another frigate taken from the French Navy. The crew of the Hermoine had mutinied and killed the officers on board before surrendering to the Spanish.
The HMS Surprise and Captain Hamilton led the rescue mission, which was a success when the Spanish were defeated and the ship was returned to the British Navy. After the Hermoine was returned to the British Navy, Captain Hamilton was knighted for his conduct during the rescue.
The legend of HMS Surprise has continued to have relevance in history and literature, in part, due to the writings of author Patrick O’Brian. It was his favorite ship and was featured in his writings about the adventures of Captain Aubrey and Maturin, a surgeon in the Aubrey-Maturin series of books. Through those writings and among lovers of British Naval history, the HMS Surprise continues to be popular for model ship collectors.
