Harvey Model Boats

Available in different sizes and colors, Harvey Model Boats are replicas of the Baltimore clipper ships by the same name. The Harvey was one of the many clipper ships designed by the American Navy to ensure faster movement in the seas.  The ship built in 1847 at Baltimore in Maryland had two masts, many sails and a spacious and uncluttered deck. The Harvey proved to be very useful during the Californian gold rush and successfully transported gold from California to the other parts of the US.

History and Journey of Harvey Ships

The Baltimore clipper is the name given to fast sailing ships that had low gun capacity but were easy manoeuverable due to their sleek hulls and sharp angled prows. The advantage of these ships was they could easily move in and out of small coastal harbors and thus complete their journeys in a shorter period of time. The Harvey proved to be an effective clipper and widely used to successfully overtake and capture British merchantmen carrying cargo to support the British forces.

This high speed ship proved to be very useful in the California gold rush when it completed the journey from California to New York via Cape Horn  in 89 days. The journey was tough and long as the Panama Canal had not been built at that time.

The ship, like the early clippers, had two masts, a hull that was designed for reaching high speeds, many sails and an uncluttered deck. This allowed storage of a huge amount of cargo and quick furling and unfurling of the sails around the Cape Horn during the period of fierce storms.
