Though yachts are used for recreational purposes today, they originally had quite different roots. Let’s take a look at their history.

Background of the Yacht

The term “yacht” referred to any fast moving, light sailing vessel. Yachts were used for chasing pirates by the Dutch navy.Another use was taking pilots to waiting ships. Once yachts began to be used for levying customs duties, they caught the eyeofrich Dutch people; soon private yachts were in demand and they began to be used for pleasure trips.

Yachts began to be considered a vessel for carrying important people in Britain and elsewhere after Charles II returned to England from Holland in a yacht. As yacht ownership spread through the aristocracy, yacht races sprung up.

Yachts were used for military purposes again during World War II.

Yacht Use Today

Yachts today have the best technology and equipment in place, unlike the earliest ones which did not have a motor. As boats and ships have evolved, so have yachts. However, yachts have perhaps the most luxurious interiors, being a major recreational interest of the wealthy.

Laura Dekker became the youngest person to sail around the globe on 21st January, 2012 when she arrived at Simpson Bay, Saint Maarten by yacht. She began her circumnavigation of the world on 21st August, 2010, when she was just 14 years old. She handled her yacht, Guppy, on her own throughout. This talented young sailor hails from the Netherlands.
