Just a quick note to let you know that both Albatross and America docked safely at Longboat Key, and both look great. Thank you so much for your kind attention to all this. The Albatross is a lovely little ship, although she does look a little lost in our apartment. With the benefit of hindsight I probably should have got the full sized USS Constitution, but I was a little apprehensive about the size. Anyway, I'll save that for another day. History of the America: 

Original specifications: - (later Camilla), Memphis, America),Schooner (2m) L/B/D 31m * 7m * 3.4m, Hull: Wood, Complement: 25. Designer: George Steers, Built William H. Brown, New York; 1851.

The America was a schooner built by a syndicate in the United States to make money in yacht races and display the shipbuilding skills of the U.S. particularly since, at that time, Britain was considered the foremost yacht building nation. The America model yacht is designed to replicate the impressive design and sailing prowess of this historic schooner.

The ship was sailed to England in 1851 for races in conjunction with Britain’s Great Exhibition. The design of the medium cup yacht was significantly different than the typical designs of the nineteenth century, which resulted in her challengers dropping out of the Royal Yacht Squadron race at the sight of her.

One of the syndicators decided to enter the America in a called the Royal Yacht Squadron’s One Hundred Guinea Cup. The race was a 53 mile regatta around the Isle of Wight. America was the only non-English yacht to enter the race of the seven schooners and eight cutters and won the race by 18 minutes. That regatta is now known as the America’s Cup.

After winning the race, America was sold by the syndicate and raced only a few more times. Over the next several years, the schooner was used by both the Union Army and the Confederate Army. When sailing for the Union, she was the S.S. America and renamed the Memphis by the Confederates. .

In the years following the Civil War, America returned to private ownership and raced a few times, including the first race in her honor, which was America’s Cup of 1890. She eventually fell into disrepair and was broken up. America model yacht is designed to replicate America in her original glory down to the smallest detail, as all our ship yachts and boats.
